Norwegian Maritime Museum, Simerics, and Orca3D Partner to Analyze Ancient Norwegian Sailboats
Orca3D Marine CFD enables Norwegian Archeologists to simulate the performance of ancient boats using CFD software
BELLEVUE, WA May 9 2017 – Simerics and Orca3D, who have worked together to develop Orca3D Marine CFD, are collaborating with the Norwegian Maritime Museum (NMM) to analyze historic Norwegian boats. Starting in 2008, the NMM excavated 15 shipwrecked boats on a large quay in Bjørvika, Oslo. The majority of the boats date to the late 16th century. This excavation is the largest shipwreck study in Scandinavia since the 1930s. The NMM Archeologists can now use Orca3D Marine CFD to better understand the performance of these boats without the need to become a CFD specialist.
By working together, Simerics, Inc. and Orca3D have enabled NMM Archeologists to learn about the boats and the society that the boats came from, to better understand both.
“The Barcode boats are not sleek, fast looking sailboats. They were probably for carrying cargo. Therefore, it will be fascinating to see how they actually moved through the water. We will also be able to compare the Barcode boats to other boats of a similar era and other boats from similar locations,” said Sarah Fawsitt, Archeologists, NMM. “We are very excited to use Orca3D Marine CFD simulation to add another dimension to our understanding of how these ancient ships actually moved in the water.”
“Orca3D Marine CFD is providing additional knowledge about these boats and the people that were involved through the team at NMM,” said Rich Moore, Vice President Business Development, Simerics.
